The AppLe a Day Initiative

A learning continuity framework for sustaining readiness between instructional periods.

Small, consistent acts of learning that keep students confident and ready for what comes next.

Designed for educators, institutions, and program leaders seeking scalable approaches to sustaining learning across instructional gaps.

Academic breaks and transitions between sequenced courses create predictable learning gaps.

Learning momentum fades when school is not in session.

Academic breaks and transitions between sequenced courses often lead to erosion of foundational knowledge. The AppLE framework addresses this challenge through structured, retrieval-based daily engagement designed to maintain momentum without replicating full instruction.

A Framework for Sustained Readiness

The AppLe a Day Initiative provides a structured, low-barrier approach to maintaining readiness during instructional gaps. Built around the AppLe framework (Apply + Learn), a continuity-oriented design model for sustaining learning between instructional periods, the initiative emphasizes small, daily retrieval-based activities delivered through familiar platforms. These brief engagements support continued readiness for future learning without replicating full instruction.

  • Daily retrieval practice

  • Structured choice pathways

  • Confidence calibration

  • Growth-oriented feedback

  • Scalable digital delivery

From Framework to Practice

The KiSS (Keep in School Shape)  Program represents the secondary and postsecondary mathematics implementation of the AppLE framework.

Future  K–8 implementations are currently in development.

Grounded in research

The AppLe a Day framework is gounded on established research in:

  • Retrieval practice

  • Metacognition

  • Academic engagement

  • Transfer of learning

Presentations and Workshops

The AppLe a Day Initiative is presented through interactive workshops and invited talks that support educators in designing their own implementation.

• Interactive conference workshops
• Institutional consultations
• Template walkthroughs
• Implementation planning support

About the creator

The AppLe a Day Initiative was developed by Carla van de Sande, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Arizona State University and creator of the Keep in School Shape (KiSS) Program. The AppLe framework extends the design principles first developed through the KiSS Program.

Carla's research focuses on designing scalable learning supports that help students maintain readiness during gaps in instruction. Her work emphasizes low-cost, high-impact instructional innovations that promote persistence and learning continuity.
